The honest take
Slovenia is what happens when a small country borders Austria, Italy, Croatia, and Hungary, inherits decent infrastructure from the Yugoslav era, joins the EU and Schengen in 2004, and then mostly gets ignored by international relocation conversations. Ljubljana is a genuinely liveable city of 300,000 that has the coffee culture, cycling infrastructure, and pedestrian old town of cities three times its size, at costs that make Vienna or Amsterdam feel aggressive by comparison. The Adriatic coast (Piran, Portorož) gives you Italy's coastline without Italy's prices or Italy's bureaucracy — a genuine competitive advantage. The Julian Alps are not a marketing line: Triglav National Park and Lake Bled are an hour from the capital. For EU citizens, Slovenia is effectively open — right of residence, right to work, access to the healthcare system. For non-EU nationals, the permit process runs through local Administrative Units and is less streamlined than some neighbours, but Slovenia's size means queues are short. The progressive income tax peaks at 50% — high by regional standards — which is the most important number to model before committing. Corporate tax is a flat 19%. The country runs on Slovenian, with English fluency high in Ljubljana and in technical sectors; outside urban areas, German is your second option before English. The Slovenian work ethic occupies the Alpine rather than Balkan end of the spectrum, which surprises people who assume otherwise.
