The honest take

Spain gives you a lot for your money, but which Spain matters enormously — the country operates as several parallel fiscal regimes that most guides treat as one thing. The Canary Islands run a dedicated economic zone (ZEC) with 4% corporate tax, 7% VAT equivalent (IGIC) instead of the mainland's 21% IVA, and some of the best production incentives in Europe — an EU-jurisdiction company with sub-5% tax, in year-round 25°C weather, geographically in Africa. The Basque Country and Navarra operate entirely independent tax systems under the historic Concierto Económico, with their own income and corporate rates. Madrid Community and Andalusia have abolished wealth tax entirely. For individuals relocating under the Startup Law (the former 'Beckham Law'), a 24% flat income tax applies for four years — available to qualifying remote workers, employees, and entrepreneurs above a minimum income threshold. Málaga has become the default digital nomad hub: lower costs than Barcelona, better weather than Madrid, and a flight network that rivals both. For those who don't want to work in Spain legally but want to live there: the Non-Lucrative Visa is widely used by remote workers in a legal grey area that Spanish authorities have not historically pursued. The pace is non-negotiable — dinner before 9pm identifies you as foreign.
